Memes have become a crucial part of how people process their feelings about everything. From global politics to dating to movies, countless memes are made every day to capture even the most fleeting of moments, like the recent departure of Spiderman from the Marvel Universe. The importance of meme culture to hip-hop culture is no less, with many of the culture’s most prominent personalities becoming foundational memes one way or another over the years.

Popular rappers can’t really choose to not become memes either: they’re just too popular. But what do we think about rappers who got famous as memes and/or make music with the intent of becoming a trendy piece of social media content? With notable artists such as Ugly Gd, Doja Cat, and Bhad Bhabie achieving mixed results, let’s look at the rise and fall of meme rap.
